{one week in of being my own boss}

Posted by Crystal on Feb 8, 2010 in own boss

{learn… original painting by corid}

Alright things that I learnt my first week of being my own boss:

    • I need to have everything around me organized. I hate looking for things.
    • We need more space! Wrapping up packages with your computer and sewing machine on the same table is not to fun.
    • Time slips away from you way faster when you are the one in control of it. Need a bit more structure to my days.
    • Our living room gets a lot of sun in the afternoon and will be perfect for pictures. I am not happy with the quality of mine now in either shop.
    • I have more time to create and have done tons of sketches for cards for Freakin Awesome Prints. Hope to have them up in March!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Stay tuned for some more great posts this week. One all about my kittens!
If you have any suggestions or comments about being your own boss please feel free to leave it. I will take all the help I can get.

Favorite Designs Of Chocolate & Wine

Posted by Crystal on Feb 7, 2010 in Design

Now I am a package and branding design nut, to the point where it can take me hours to grocery shop just because the designs of the packages intrigue me so much. So in the kind of theme of valentine’s day here are some of my favorite package designs of chocolate & wine.  Each great wine needs it’s partner in crime chocolate! (only really works with red wine but for design reasons. Lets just judge the book by it’s cover.)

{i wanted to start with this still cider because i have this in my fridge and bought it because i loved the packaging & it’s local. source the dieline.}

{mmm… chocolate by number how divine! source the dieline}

{i love the label design and colors of these Mas Romaní wine bottles. source the dieline.}

{the simple text and colors on brown are simply inspiring. source the dieline}

{i don’t know about you but i think this is the best generic gift for christmas. source the dieline}

{delicious wine is always better with chocolate! mmm… source the dieline}

{beautiful simple catchy design. that is what i love to see. source the dieline}

{the packaging just draws me in. source the dieline}

Music Video Lucky by All India Radio

Posted by Crystal on Feb 4, 2010 in Art Work, Inspirations

Alright this All India Radio music video rocks! It is done by an Australia based animation studio (Deepee Studios) using the animation technique, where a team of people paint in the air with glow sticks, frame after frame to create entire sequences of animation, usually taking a whole night to shoot.  I am a huge fan of stop motion and this gives me the same happy feeling when I watch it. Enjoy!

{lookbook love}

Posted by Crystal on Feb 3, 2010 in Fashion

Finally I have some me internet time and I am catching up on some of my favorite blogs. Now lookbook is one of my favorite fashion blogs but yet I have mixed feelings about it sometimes.  There are young kids on there (13 - 15) that are posting their fashion which is great but then they are smoking and showing themselves with pills, etc.  I just have a problem with that.  I mean this is the generation to come after us and this worries me.  I’m not to sure if I am along on this one.

Also because it is such a fashion show sometimes after looking at to many pictures of super skinny girls in there cute fashion, I start to feel drab about myself and my style.

Alright enough of my rant, here are some of my favorite current looks on lookbook. I hope you enjoy~

Oh Elk Me… I miss my sister.

Posted by Crystal on Feb 2, 2010 in love

I put together this treasury for my sister.  Oh Elk Me… comes from a time when we were going to Wal-Mart and there was just a big group of people standing around. I said ‘oh elk me’ (because elk just stand around) and it stuck. Every time we are together and we get in this same situation ‘oh elk me’ comes out. I hope you enjoy!

Read on about my super awesome sister!

{me and mandi at the kooks show in montreal}

Well now that I have time to breath and write about what I like. I just wanted to give a little shout out  to my amazing little sister who I miss so dearly (we live about 2,300 kms away from each other).  Mandi is my best friend and even though we are two very different people we just manage to get along just right.  This was not always the case, when we were younger we would fight like crazy (even drawing blood sometimes) but I think those hard years are partially what makes us so much stronger friends.

{mandi visiting me at starbucks where i worked over 2 years ago}

I miss our movie nights, random walks in the village taking pictures, shopping together as she would pick out outfits for me (she really is the stylish one out of the two of us!), our ugly laughs to make us laugh and of course our serious talks about life, love and the future.

{mandi and i on a random road trip down to the states}

We have this crazy connection that sometimes I feel is telepathic its insane. We will not tell each other what we are doing in the evening but we manage to do the same thing, bake the same thing or buy the same thing. Creepy sometimes.

I am so proud of my sister. She just got married in September and is an amazing wife to Marshall (he is one lucky guy!) She just started blogging and she is so dedicated to it and does some amazing posts on planning your wedding, recipes for baking & cooking and travel in 300 words or less.

I think everyone should know this amazing god fearing, super organized, loving, caring and fun lady! You can check out here blog here and her husband Marshall just starting up a blog as well about ‘real stories of things unjust in front of your face and giving you the opportunity to turn your hearts that “move” into hands that heal.’ You can check out his blog called Nothing Called Hope here.

Remember the ones that are closest to you because they will be there when no one else is.

well as some of you know i was laid off work last week. i have had some pity comments from people like my sister giving me her I don’t approve but i love you ‘If it makes you happy, then I’m happy.’ oh silly sister, some paths are not for everyone. but the truth is, i am happy. this is what i wanted. to be my own boss by my 27th birthday and well i am a few months ahead of the game. i have a financial plan going into this. i will be applying for grants to start up a business (design & screen printing) as this is much easier to get while you are unemployed BUT in the mean time my boyfriend and i are starting up a print & card shop on Etsy. {freakinawesomeprints.etsy.com}

but with this lay off it does not just benefit me but it benefits you the reader. somethings you can expect in February. a few more design additions to the blog. weekly artist/etsy shop shout out. thankful thursdays, and vintage fashion fridays will be back in full force {i have a lot of great ideas that involve a mans option on vintage fashion!} and i want to become a etsy treasury queen!

working from home is going to bring on some challenges but really i am going to get to sell vintage and art, i’m not to sure how much  better it can get {oh and did I mention that my man works from home as well} to much random fun is going to happen now~

here is my latest treasury on etsy called ‘what you do when you lost your job’ some necessities to needed to have a great home office. show it some love!
